EastCoastAngler.net is proud to continue our second installment in our new series about the craftsmen behind the lures we can’t get enough of. We are bringing you a little bit about the lives of the people who make beautiful, hand made, wooden lures; the producers of true Americana. It seems only fitting that our second post is about an indie plug craftsmen, the artist behind Murph The Surf, Classic Wooden Lures & Plugs. Read on and meet Mr. John Irwin.
John hails from Mystic Island, New Jersey and spent his childhood near Gravelling Point. John and his family reside in Folsom, New Jersey, his native state. He began making plugs about 20 years ago, and in my opinion his creations are reminiscent of Tim Burton masterpieces. He began creating plugs for a few specific reasons. John primarily fishes using wood plugs, loves working with his hands and has creative, artistic talent. Blend all these elements together – and bam, Murph the Surf is born. Read on.

Captain Tom Pitasi has been fishing most of his life. Born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, Tom spent much of his youth fishing Long Island Sound for Bluefish and Striped Bass. After work and on weekends Tom and his friend Kevin, whose family owns a marina, would borrow a boat and go fishing. After high school Tom spent 14 years in the telecommunications / cellular industry, all the while fishing whenever he could. In 2000, Coastal Fishing Charters was “launched”, fishing out of Norwalk, Connecticut, and on occasion, Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Today, Tom continues his duties as a Greenwich Firefighter and in 2003, Tom, his wife Denise, and their children Olivia and Thomas along with Coastal Fishing Charters moved its homeport to Waterford, Connecticut to fish Block Island Sound, Eastern Long Island Sound and its surrounding waters for Striped Bass, Bluefish, Bonito, False Albacore and Tuna. <"((((>< Adrianna Charters, Port Judith, RI (Fishing Charter)

Block Island Fishing trips are for the angler who is seeking a trophy sized Striper. Many large Stripers can be caught on the same excursion, so be sure to enter the pool before departing from the dock in the morning. Block Island has produced many large Stripers for the " Adrianna ". In fact, in the last 3 years alone she has landed 16 fish over 50 pounds and 2 of those fish in the 60 pound class. Block Island has to be the last known secret to Striper Fishing. With July and August being the top months for large Bass, it's not uncommon to catch fish in the 40 pound class on every trip. The tackle we use to land these monsters is unlike other charter boats. We specialize in light tackle methods and even after landing the fish you still can not believe what you just accomplished with such light tackle. We have had Stripers up to 54 pounds on 15 lb tackle and Stripers tipping the scale at 65 pounds on 20 lb tackle. If you don't find that an exciting task then check your pulse!
